This type of top filters are installed on top of aquarium specially suitable for handmade tanks . Its head remains completely submerged into water and keeps pumping water from two side. One is used to rotate water and another is used to pump water to box placed at top. At the top of filter sponge  is present there to such dirt and other pollutants. One need to just clean this sponge on regular basis thus saving your valuable time and effort.

Make sure head remain submerged completely into water or it will get heated up and will eventually stop working. While operating make sure to disconnect the electricity.
